Contractions

There are only two contractions in Spanish, and they are very easy to learn:

  • a + el --> al = to the

    de + el --> del = from the

The reason for these contractions is simple: the two vowel sounds have blended together and formed one written word. 

This does not occur with other a or de + Spanish word combinations:

  • a la casa
    de los amigos
    a un pueblo
    de unas amigas
