To Me, For You, By Him, From Her, etc.: Objects of Prepositions

Prepositions are a kind of word that help to explain the relative relationship of, usually, two nouns, or a noun and a pronoun or verb:

  • The letter is from my friend.
La carta es de mi amigo.

The house is behind the shop.
La casa está detrás de la tienda.

The preposition a -- to, at -- takes the indirect object pronouns, but other prepositions have their own set of object of preposition pronouns:

para mífor me
tisin tiwithout you
éldelante de élin front of him
ellahacia ellatoward her
Ud.por Ud.for/by you (formal)
nosotros/as      con nosotros/aswith us
vosotros/asdetrás de vosotros/as      behind you-all
elloscontra ellosagainst them
ellasdelante de ellasin front of them
Uds.según Uds.according to you-all (formal)

Note that, while is accented, ti is not.

The combinations con and or ti become conmigo and contigo. Consigo means with himself/yourself/yourselves (formal) and is used as a reflexive:

  • Habla consigo mismo.
    He talks with himself.

Con él, con ella, con Ud./Uds. is used when there is no reflexive action:

  • Voy con él al cine.
I am going with him to the cinema.
