Talking about the Present: Regular Verbs in the Present Indicative II

You know that there are three classes of "regular" verbs in Spanish -- "regular" meaning that they follow a pattern when we "conjugate" the verb, that is, change the endings to match the subject.

Here is a model verb from each class:

-AR      HABLAR      to speak
-ERCOMERto eat
-IRVIVIRto live

The verb with the -ar, -er or -ir ending, is called the infinitive. The part of verb without the -ar, -er or -ir ending is called the stem, and it is the part on which the verb conjugation is built.

Remember that all the I (yo) forms end in -o and the we (nosotros) forms end in -mos. However, the nosotros forms also vary. Notice that hablamos has the a of hablar, comemos has the e of comer, and vivimos has the i of vivir.

Each class of verbs has its own set of endings.

Spanish verbs work differently than English verbs. Although they can be challenging to learn, if you look at them step by step, you'll see that the verb system is both sensible and efficient.

You already know how to conjugate all three kinds of regular present indicative verbs for yo, nosotros, usted and ustedes.

Here are model verb conjugations for tú, vosotros, el/ella and ellos/ellas:

  • HABLAR  -AR

    tú hablas = you speak
vosotros habláis = you-all (familiar) speak
    él/ella habla = he/she speaks
    ellos/ellas hablan = they (masculine/feminine) speak

    COMER  -ER

    tú comes = you eat
vosotros coméis = you-all (familiar) eat
    él/ella come = he/she eats
    ellos/ellas comen = they (masculine/feminine) eat

    VIVIR  -IR

    tú vives
    = you live
vosotros vivís = you-all (familiar) live
    él/ella vive = he/she lives
    ellos/ellas viven = they (masculine/feminine) live

Here are the three model verbs completely conjugated in the present indicative tense for all persons. Remember, they are models and the same endings can be used with any regular -ar, -er or -ir verb.

Remember to follow these steps to conjugate correctly:

  • 1. Identify the infinitive.
    2. Determine whether it's an -ar, -er or -ir verb.
    3. Obtain the stem by deleting the -ar, -er or -ir ending.
    4. Add the following endings on to the stem:

él/ella, Ud.hablacomevive
nosotros/nosotras      hablamos      comemos      vivimos
