Talking about the Present: Irregular Verbs in the Present Indicative II

Three important irregular verbs that share a common conjugation pattern are estar -- to be, dar -- to give and ir -- to go. Another important irregular verb is ser -- to be.

ESTARDAR      IRSER

estásdasvaseres
él/ella, Ud.estádavaes
nosotros/asestamos      damos      vamos      somos
vosotros/asestáisdaisvaissois
ellos/ellas, Uds.      estándanvanson

Even though these verbs are "irregular", if you know the endings for estar, you also know the endings for dar and ir! Note, however, the absence of accents in the conjugations of dar, ir and ser.

Here are five important verbs that are irregular only in the yo form:

CONOCER -- to know someone      yo conozco
HACER -- to make/to doyo hago
PONER -- to put/to placeyo pongo
SABER -- to know informationyo sé
SALIR -- to leave/to go outyo salgo

Only the yo form is irregular; the rest of the these verbs' conjugations are completely regular.

Some verbs are irregular in more than one way:

TENER -- to have        (irregular in the yo form and stem-changing as well):

yotengo          I have, etc.

él/ella, Ud.tiene
nosotros/astenemos
vosotros/astenéis
ellos/ellas, Uds.      tienen

Note that compound forms of irregular verbs follow the irregular pattern of the basic irregular verb:

DESCONOCER -- to not know something      yo desconozco
REHACER -- to make over/to do overyo rehago
DISPONER -- to dispose/lay outyo dispongo
DETENER -- to detain/arrestyo detengo, tú detienes, etc.
