Verbs like Gustar and Faltar

The Spanish equivalent of to like is gustar -- to be pleasing. Gusta -- it is pleasing and gustan -- they are pleasing are combined with direct object pronouns to say I like ___, you like___, etc.:

  • me gusta = to me it is pleasing = I like it
    me gustan = to me they are pleasing = I like them

    te gusta = to you it is pleasing = you like it
    te gustan = to you they are pleasing = you like them

    le gusta = to him/her, you (formal) it is pleasing = he/she, you (formal) like it
    le gustan = to me they are pleasing = he/she, you (formal) like them

    nos gusta = to us it is pleasing = we like it
    nos gustan = to us they are pleasing = we like them

    os gusta = to you-all it is pleasing = you-all like it
    os gustan = to you-all they are pleasing = you-all like them

    les gusta = to them, you-all (formal) it is pleasing = they, you-all (formal) like it
    les gustan = to them, you-all (formal) they are pleasing = they, you-all (formal) like them


  • Me gustan los gatos = To me are pleasing the cats = I like cats.
    Les gusta el gato = To them is pleasing the cat = They like cats.


Gustar can be conjugated in the first and second persons as well:

  • No les gusto = I am not pleasing to them = They don't like me.
    Me gustas = To me you are pleasing = I like you.
    ¿Te gusto? = Am I pleasing to you = Do you like me?


Other verbs work the same way:

Faltar -- to be lacking:

  • Me falta un lápiz = To me is lacking a pencil = I am missing a pencil.

Encantar -- to be very pleasing; to "enchant":

  • Nos encantan los postres de chocolate = To us are very pleasing the chocolate desserts = We love chocolate desserts.
