Counting I: Cardinal Numbers 1 to 100

Use uno for counting in general (uno, dos, tres...); un is used with masculine nouns: un perro; and una is used with feminine nouns: una casa, treinta y una flores.

Note that, from dieciséis to diecinueve and veintiuno to veintinueve, the numbers are formed by combing the "tens" word with the "ones" word:

  • dieciséis = diez + y + seis; veintisiete  = veinte + y +siete

The y turns into i when the numbers are combined into one word.

Note that some number words that normally are not accented do require accents when combined into longer numbers, e.g., veintidós.

From 30 on, the numbers are written separately: treinta y uno, treinta y dos, etc.

To form numbers in Spanish from 30 to 100, just choose from each column:

uno/a (1)
dos (2)
(30) treintatres (3)
(40) cuarentacuatro (4)
(50) cincuenta     cinco (5)
(60) sesenta  yseis (6)
(70) setentaand      siete (7)
(80) ochentaocho (8)
(90) noventanueve (9)

  • Treinta y dos = thirty-two, cuarenta y cinco = forty-five, etc.

Cien is one hundred.
