Spanish language immersion

With the explosion of online language courses on the Internet, we believe that CDs and DVDs will soon be a thing of the past. Why learn Spanish in isolation when you can learn in an interactive way and at the same time make friends with individuals who adore Spanish just like you do?

In the past, we signed up for membership in a handful of Spanish language courses online and we’ve come to know which ones are tuned in to the realities and difficulties of learning a language. Our vote goes to www.dailyspanishphrases.com as a potentially effective and fun course. Our reasons–

  1. the method used is very user friendly and flexible
  2. the Spanish lessons are relevant, tailored to your level, and varied. The modules are designed by expert language instructors who instinctively know a thing or two about repetition and frequency. They’ve programmed a product that you can use and apply right away;
  3. the Spanish lessons don’t concentrate on one aspect of learning. They combine study with entertainment, so the lessons are a lively mix of frequently used words and phrases, conjugation, games and exercises;
  4. you can download a sample lesson without feeling obligated to sign up (although you would benefit from daily lessons, significantly improving your speaking and writing abilities).
  5. cost – most people hesitate to sign up for courses because they think they cost an arm and a leg. Not Daily Spanish Phrases – the owners have a mission: to spread appreciation for Spanish language and culture, not to monetize their web site. The proof is in the pudding. One complete course is under $40.00.
  6. results are guaranteed. That’s probably the best incentive there is. You won’t be able to write like Cervantes or be as eloquent as a Spanish poet, but if you feel that you’ve been forced into the bull ring, you’ll be able to manage on your own with the Spanish phrases you learn.

Having said that, do you still believe that books, CDs and DVDs will be as effective as getting into total immersion? We’re not suggesting you pack your bags and spend a year living in a Spanish-speaking country with a family.

Put your tools aside and learn Spanish with the “fun” component thrown in. If you like fashion or music, pick up your favorite Spanish magazine. Borrow a children’s book or a comic book in Spanish. Rent Spanish movies and resist the urge to look at the sub-titles. Visit the consulate of any Spanish-speaking country in your area – Spain, Mexico, Honduras, Peru – and see if you can join in some of their cultural activities. Sign up for one of the discussion forums on the Net and take a stand on an issue that you feel passionate about. Blog or learn the Tango. Eat Spanish tapas or tortillas. Take a tour of Daily Spanish Phrases and put back the joy into learning.

Do it today! You’ll never know when a plane ticket to Cancun or Madrid might land on your lap. ¡Qué maravilla!
